What Is Role Mining? Building Effective Role Structures in IAM Systems
Role mining is a process found within Identity and Access Management (IAM) systems. It involves analyzing the existing entitlement matrix to work out what roles employees could realistically be assigned. Usually offered as a dedicated module within IAM products, role mining’s core goal is to build logical, effective role structures. This turns an otherwise complex role management landscape into something far more understandable, manageable, and secure.

A Sample Role Mining Process
Role mining typically analyzes the roles that could be constructed from users’ existing entitlements. For example, filters such as:
A role should contain at least 3 entitlements A role should contain at least 5 people
are applied, and the roles matching this definition are automatically analyzed by the system.
Sample Analysis Results
The analysis produces two core matrices:
Entitlement Matrix:
Role 1 = Entitlement 1 - Entitlement 2 - Entitlement 3 - Entitlement 4
Role 2 = Entitlement 1 - Entitlement 3 - Entitlement 4 - Entitlement 5 - Entitlement 6
User-Role Relationship Matrix:
Role 1 = User 1 - User 2 - User 3 - User 4 - User 5
Role 2 = User 1 - User 2 - User 3 - User 4 - User 5 - User 6 - User 7
Benefits
As a result of these analyses:
- Roles tailored to actual needs can be built
- User-role relationships can be established more effectively
- Automated provisioning processes can be improved
- A solid foundation can be established for role management
Role mining stands out as a powerful tool for optimizing access management and strengthening security, especially in large and complex organizations.
